Troubleshooting/Equipment Assessment

Responsbible for the determination of equipment operational assessment usually for the purpose of finding the cause of process and/or control problems.

Control System Design Engineer

Conduct all phases from concept thru design and complete responsibilities with successful commissioning of the system.

PROJECT: Gas Turbine Water Injection Control Improvement Feasibility Study
• Researched and completely understood the existing installed Wet-Nox system. Outlined the cause of operational and maintenance issues arising from the existing design. Provided alternatives for a control system improvement with associated estimated costs.

PROJECT: Large Boiler Combustion Troubleshooting/Tuning Project
• Correctly identified the cause of combustion instabilities resulting from the improper application of a "combustion optimization" software "blackbox" program. Documented findings and presented the report to the client.

Provide expert technical consulting for the restoration of a decommissioned or problematic generating unit.

PROJECT: Hydro Power Plant Refurbishment & Upgrade Project
• Completed a full assessment of the abandoned remote river flow monitoring system. Researched alternatives for an upgraded design.

PROJECT: Hydro Power Plant Refurbishment & Upgrade Project
• Provided engineering consultation on the functionality of the hydraulic High Pressure Control Unit for the water turbine governor control skid. Provided technical direction, troubleshooting, and tuning to the refurbishment crew for this system.

PROJECT: Simultaneous Restoration of Two Biomass Power Plants
• Completed a performance assessment of the required steam flow for full load capacity versus the historical performance and instrumentation calibration. Provided documented proof of a severe degradation in turbine performance.

Process/Controls Troubleshooting Engineer

Conduct assessment evaluations on plant processes and/or control systems typically to determine operational problems.

PROJECT: Boiler Controls Upgrade Project
• Performed a complete functional, operational, controls and instrumentation assessment of the steam production facility to determine the best work scope for a control system upgrade project. Wrote and closely coordinate full work scope with client.

PROJECT: Combined Cycle Power Plant Steam Drain System Improvement Project
• Completed a thorough evaluation of the equipment, piping, control logic, and operational process, of the steam drain system. Detemined the causes of noise and provided formal recommendations for correcting.

PROJECT: Correctional Complex Feasibility Study Review
• Conducted online functional testing of the site's boiler operation to record actual energy usage during peak demand loads of a cold morning with existing boilers operating at 15 psig. Concluded with devices valved in/out existing boiler under capacity.

PROJECT: Gas Turbine Refurbishment & Turbine/HRSG Controls Upgrade Project
• Successfully identified the design short falls of the existing Solar Turbine hydraulic starter system in achieving the required NFPA 85 five minute purge for use with a HRSG. Implemented a temporary mechanical fix prior to installation of a VFD drive.

PROJECT: Refurbishment of Large Boiler Pneumatic Combustion Controls
• Performed a complete online and offline control system evaluative assessment for a Bailey pneumatic control system. Provided a formal control system unit outage work recommendation report of findings.

• Primary consultant to identify and coordinate all boiler burner combustion repairs thus achieving (with upgrades provided by Todd Combustion) a total reduction in Nox of greater than 12% with no increase in CO and with improved boiler performance.

• Successfully identified the cause of a historical (5 years) 21 MW load curtailment. Achieved this result by conducting a thorough internal "crawl-through" boiler inspection of flue gas passages.

PROJECT: Simultaneous Restoration of Two Biomass Power Plants
• While reviewing the forced draft fan controls, found and reported the hazardous safety problem of the incorrect (i.e., too high) fan motor overload settings resulting from the recent replacement of the overcurrent relays by another contractor.

• Performed a complete control system evaluative assessment for the existing control logic in the PLC's, compared this to the OEM original design functional logic, and BaileyCAD logic. Provided a formal control system improvement program proposal document.

• Performed a complete hardware evaluative assessment of the local area networked Allen-Bradley PLC system consisting of PC server/client based HMI's, ControlLogix redundant PLC's, redundant industrial switches, and ControlNet communication to remote I/O.

PROJECT: State Prison Solar Turbines (2) Maintenance Services
• Completed a full assessment of the multiple control systems used to attempt to automate load dispatch of gas turbin/generators, facility loads, and utility supplemental power. Completed work through use of breaking down site documentation.

• Correctly diagnosed and replaced an ENCORP GPC unit. Worked with the ENCORP field engineer to transfer correct programming software, obtained communication capabilities with a laptop, and was able to perform diagnostics and tuning changes.

• Performed a complete performance evaluation of the site's Allen-Bradley PLC-5 ControlNet version 1.25 communication with the 1794 Flex I/O modules due to a suspicion of corrupted module configurations in the PLC-5/40C processor.

• Successfully corrected the corruption of the configuration program for the site's gas turbine Variable Frequency Drives (VFD). These units supplied by Solar Turbine were used for the starter system and communciated via A/B ControlNet 1.25 to the PLC-5.

PROJECT: Steam Drum Level Control Stability
• Performed a complete process evaluation relating to boiler feedwater, steam flow, and drum level. Documented findings, coordinated repairs and upgrades, and successfully commissioned a much improved drum level control system.

• Reverse engineered the complete feedwater flow/drum level control system, found and corrected all design flaws, tuning constants, and characterizations, and commissioned in the old Westinghouse Model 1500 GPC (General Purpose Controller) micro's.

PROJECT: Turbine Gland Steam Controls Upgrade Project
• Completed a thorough evaluation of the equipment, piping, control logic, and operational process, of the turbine steam gland system. Detemined the causes of instabilities and provided formal recommendations for correcting.

• Evaluated instabilities of two natural gas combustion turbines with HRSG's. During supplemental duct burner operation, the DCS control logic would drive the CT's into the whole. Found the problem and corrected the logic.

PROJECT: Twin 335 MW Units Complete Controls Tuning Program
• Correctly diagnosed the cause of load instabilities for a large GE steam turbine main steam control valve governor problem. Past extensive experience with GE MHC systems on a variable speed steam turbines easily provided the correct solution.

• Resolved a complex Allen-Bradley PLC (with ControlNet 1.5) based power generation control system corruption problem using an in place team of local plant talent.
