Modicon Quantum PLC

PROJECT: Biomass Power Generation Baghouse Filtration PLC Simulator

A mid 1980's vintage biomass power generation facility utilizes a Baghouse Filtration System to remove the solid particulate matter inherent in the combustion of wood products in the boiler exit flue gas. The filtration system consists of 12 individual baghouse compartment units each having their own isolation and reverse air flow valves used for cleaning. A Modicon Quantum PLC is used to perform automated control of sequentially stepping through a cleaning sequence to maintain good flue gas flow through this process. The operator interface to the PLC is the typical panel board indicating lights, switches, and push buttons.

This project was to upgrade the operator interface to an HMI computer screen providing much more information, more interaction, user friendly, and intuitive information to the operator. A fully functional simulator was built to facilitate the design of the HMI graphic.

A full 60 minute YouTube video demonstrating this simulator and HMI graphic upgrade can be watched at:

RESULTS

• Reverse engineered the existing ladder logic using ProWorx 32 into a Boolean digital logic drawing using Microsoft Visio. This provided me an in depth understanding of the original functional logic design so that I could now design an upgraded HMI graphic.
