Project Startup & Commissioning

Responsible for coming in towards the end of construction, conducting equipment verfication (loop testing), and successfully making the system operational.

Control System Design Engineer

Conduct all phases from concept thru design and complete responsibilities with successful commissioning of the system.

PROJECT: Hydro Power Plant Refurbishment & Upgrade Project
• Completed a full bench test of the components in the new spread spectrum wireless SCADA system used to bring the river flow parameter into the power house.

• Completed the design work and commissioned a stand-alone microprocessor magnetic speed sensor device used for turbine roll-up, generator excitation, and over speed protection.

PROJECT: Hydrogen Sulfide Incinerator Replacement for Geothermal Generation
• Conducted final construction inspection, all control system loop checks, systems startup testing, and final commissioning to full operating status of this replacement H2S Incinerator.

Control System Tuner

The ability to tune control loops both simple and complex process/control logic.

PROJECT: DCS Upgrade Project
• Completed the initial unit control system characterization and dynamic response tuning after retuning from a major outage and major DCS upgrade. Completed establishing all automatic control in every control loop from minimum to full load.

PROJECT: Boiler Controls Upgrade Project
• Represented the client as the "Owner's Engineer" overseeing and directly participating in the startup and commissioning activities of all three boiler's upgraded control systems.

PROJECT: Boiler Steam Blowdown Heat Recovery System
• Successfully oversaw all construction activities, placed system in service, conducted startup testing, and released for operations to the site the Sentry blowdown heat exchanger.

Review existing plant design, field verify design integrity, write and conduct final startup test procedures.

PROJECT: Combined Cycle Power Plant Steam Drain System Improvement Project
• Successfully completed loop testing of all control system modifications for the steam drain system controls. The loop testing scope included from the operator graphics all the way out to the final field devices.

PROJECT: DCS Upgrade Project
• Managed and directly participated in the instrumentation loop checks. Organized limited resources in a short timeframe to complete this critical path activity. Designed a loop test strategy to accommodate many problematic electrical circuits.

• Utilized an ABB supplied simulation software from the FAT to fully integrate the whole DCS upgrade into a simulator prior to actual installation. Completed full unit testing of boiler, turbine/generator, BMS, and balance of plant controls.

PROJECT: Gas Compressor Control Logic Upgrade Project
• Completed a successful startup and commissioning of the upgraded control system for all three client's sites of gas compressors. This client was very pleased with exceeding expectations on control stability and compressor reliability.

PROJECT: Gas Turbine Refurbishment & Turbine/HRSG Controls Upgrade Project
• Completed a successful startup and commissioning of the upgraded control system for the HRSG. This included advance 4 element control for the Plant Master switchable to single element on the fly and commissioning the Drum Level controls.

• Completed a successful startup and commissioning of the upgraded control system for the Solar Centaur 40 gas turbine. Complete automatic operation to full load was achieved for all systems including the Wet-Nox system.

• Completed all final loop testing of the upgraded turbine control system inputs and outputs to the Allen-Bradley ControLogix PLC.

• Conducted full loop testing of all the inputs and outputs for the two Preferred Instruments controllers (Plant Master & Drum Level) on the upgraded Heat Recovery Steam Generator (HRSG) controls.

PROJECT: Hydro Power Plant Refurbishment & Upgrade Project
• Conducted all of the final start up activities for both hydro units, bypass flow control valves, and all miscellaneous sub-systems. Successfully placed in operation the full power generation facility.

• Conducted the final tuning of the automatic synchronizer to match the characteristics of the turbine mechanical hydraulic governor and the utility line characteristics with the generator breaker closing event.

• Designed and conducted most of the PLC (A/B SLC-504) loop testing for the analog and digital inputs and outputs. The scope of the loop testing extended from the field devices through the PLC I/O ladder logic.

• Fully commission the spread spectrum wireless SCADA system used to transmit a remote river flow downstream measurement back into the hydro power house for load control.

PROJECT: Refurbishment of Large Boiler Pneumatic Combustion Controls
• Successfully conducted all loop testing, startup, and commissioning activities including tuning of all boiler controls with these being Bailey pneumatic controllers. All activities were documented and scheduled within Microsoft Project.

PROJECT: Simultaneous Restoration of Two Biomass Power Plants
• Conducted final start up activities for both biomass generation units supporting all control system and process troubleshooting activities. Successfully placed in operation both full power generation facilities ahead of the expect schedule.

• Troubleshot, tested, and commissioned the mechanical/hydraulic turbine controls. This work included supporting the turbine over-speed testing and initial turbine control valve stroking.

PROJECT: Steam Drum Level Control Stability
• Conducted final construction inspection, all control system loop checks, systems startup testing, and final commissioning to full operating status for the upgraded boiler drum level indication and control system.

PROJECT: Turbine Gland Steam Controls Upgrade Project
• Successfully completed loop testing of all control system modifications for the gland steam system controls. The loop testing scope included from the operator graphics all the way out to the final field devices.

PROJECT: Twin 335 MW Units Complete Controls Tuning Program
• Commissioned upgraded turbine control logic that converted megawatt setpoint control to pulse width control to the control valve governor Mechanical Hydraulic Control (MHC) system.
