Fixed FireSight System - Series 6515

PROJECT: Boiler Black Furnace Trip Protection for a Large Steam Unit

This project was a 180 MW, natural gas-fired fossil fueled generating unit with a Babcock & Wilcox 1.2 MMlbs/hr boiler at 1800 psig and 1000F final superheat. The unit was constructed in 1952 and typical for this generation of boilers, did not have a current National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) certified burner management system. The owners, at this time, coordinated with their insurance carrier and obtained approval to install high resolution color boiler cameras as a manual method for determining correct fuel/air combustion.

The project consisted of reviewing the current available color boiler camera technology, purchasing equipment, installation and startup. The cameras that were selected included a design that cooled the lens through forced compressed air allowing the lens to be directly placed inside the boiler furnace. The clarity of the final images were so impressive that even the individual igniter flames were visible during the startup burner light off sequences.

RESULTS

• Researched and designed the type and installation of an inserted lens boiler burner combustion furnace camera system.
